Understanding Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy

The ALPHA Muscle Building Program can help you achieve the ideal body. This is done through a process called Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy. But, what is hypertrophy?

Skeletal muscle hypertrophy is the increase of muscle along a cross-sectional area. This occurs through the growth in size of cells and can be divided into separate factors:

  1. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy
  2. Myofibrillar hypertrophy

Basically, both of these methods work by helping to increase the volume of muscle cells. This is a DIRECT result of adaptive response, such as through strength training.

Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy

Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy involves the storage of muscle glycogen. It leads to an increase of sarcoplasm, which is muscle fiber, and various proteins. By increasing sarcoplasmic fluid in your muscle cells, you can increase the size and the definition of your muscles.

Myofibrillar Hypertrophy

Myofibrillar hypertrophy also referred to as sarcomere hypertrophy, is focused on the increase in myofibril size. This form of hypertrophy has a greater impact on the actual size and strength of your muscles. Through protein synthesis that occurs after your body repairs damaged muscle tissue, your body produces more myofibrils. These proteins increase the size of muscle fibers and increase the ability of muscles to produce force – which can be thought of as an increase in strength.

Essentially, sarcoplasmic hypertrophy has more of a superficial effect while myofibrillar hypertrophy has a direct impact on muscle strength.
